INTRODUCTION:

Within three years, a tertiary hospital will assess the bacterial infections that cause ventilator-associated pneumonia. A prominent source of nosocomial infections is Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), which appears in patients receiving mechanical ventilation.

ICUs with intensive care can have high mortality rates from infection.The frequency of VAP-causing pathogens should be evaluated in all hospitals. We describe the spread of VAP bacterial infections in our hospital's ICUs in this research.

METHOD AND MATERIALS

Our study comprised patients who were diagnosed with VAP in the ICUs of Recep Tayyip Erdoan University Training and Research Hospital between January 9, 2015 and January 9, 2017. Retrospective analysis was done on the records kept by the infection control committee. The tracheal aspirate cultures' findings were documented.

FINDINGS:

In the ICUs of our institution, VAP was found in 61 patients in 2015, 78 patients in 2016, and 109 patients in 2017. In all 3 years, Acinetobacter spp. was the most prevalent bacterial pathogen of VAP. Compared to prior years, infection rates with Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Burkholderia cepacia, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were higher in 2017.

CONCLUSION:

Acinetobacter is the most frequent cause of VAP in our nation, just like at our hospital. It has been demonstrated over time that both Burkholderia infections and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter infections are on the rise. In order to raise the knowledge of health care professionals, continuous education should be organised, and infection control practises and the use of empiric antibiotics should be reviewed.
